Avião Solar bate recorde

Um novo avião movido totalmente a energia solar voou durante mais de 24 horas (incluindo durante a noite).

Mas poder-se-á dizer que voa mais como um insecto, o avião experimental Solar Impulse HB-SIA, que ontem se tornou na primeira aeronave tripulada que funciona apenas com energia solar a fazer um voo superior a 24 horas, incluindo o período nocturno.
O voo durou 26 horas e 9 minutos, sobre as montanhas do Jura, na Suíça.

As asas leves, de fibra de carbono, dominam a aeronave: é lá que estão as 12 mil células fotovoltaicas, que absorvem a energia do Sol, que é convertida em energia, armazenada em pilhas de lítio, semelhantes às dos automóveis eléctricos. Essa energia tem de ser gerida pelo piloto durante a noite, até voltar o Sol, planando e aproveitando as correntes — como um insecto que se deixa levar no vento.
“Foi o voo mais incrível da minha carreira. Voei 26 horas sem gastar combustível nem fazer poluição”, disse Borschberg, ao aterrar.
